Claude Code vs opencode: Choosing Your Agent CLI (and Guardrails)

Two agent CLIs, two philosophies. How to pick, how to speak their language, and the guardrail setup that keeps your agents powerful without leaking your secrets.

Agent CLIs — tools that let a model read your files, run commands and edit your code — are the highest-leverage AI adoption most small teams can make. The two that matter most in practice are Claude Code and opencode. Here's how to choose, and how to stop them doing damage.

The one-line difference

Claude Code is Anthropic's first-party agent: tight integration with Claude models, polished, and opinionated. opencode is an open, model-agnostic agent CLI (I'm biased — I run it — but the facts matter): bring your own model, including local models via Ollama, which means your work can run entirely on your own hardware.

How to choose

  • Want zero setup and the best first-party Claude experience? Claude Code.
  • Want to stay model-agnostic, or run local models for privacy? opencode.
  • Work under NDA or on air-gapped gear? opencode + a local model (Ollama) — nothing leaves the machine.
  • Mix of both? They're not mutually exclusive; many teams keep both.

Speak their language

Both tools reward the same habits. Give the agent a project context file so it knows your conventions. Keep tasks small and specific. Let it read before it writes. And make it show you the diff before anything is committed.

The guardrails that actually matter

An agent with file and shell access is powerful and dangerous in equal measure. Set these up before you let it near real work:

  • Permission rules: require confirmation for destructive commands, pushes, and anything touching secrets.
  • Secrets hygiene: keys live in the environment or a secret manager — never in a file the agent can read into context.
  • Scope limits: run agents inside the project directory, not your whole home folder.
  • Review gates: no auto-commit, no auto-push. The human approves.
  • Local where it counts: for sensitive work, point the CLI at a local model so proprietary data never hits a cloud API.
An agent is a junior engineer with root and infinite patience. Onboard it like one.

Where I land

For most small businesses the answer is boring: pick the tool that fits how you already work, set the guardrails above, and spend your energy on prompts and workflow — not on tool debates. If you want help configuring either one for your team, that's part of the small-business AI work.
